LEADERSHIP

DAVID R. ORTIGOZA - PASTOR

Ortigoza, 65, is an inspired choice to lead Aldersgate. An investigative journalist in his native Brazil, he arrived in the United States in 1995, answered the call to ministry, and joined the Conference in 2004. Bishop Charlene Kammerer (1996–2004) was a profound influence.

Ortigoza served in Lake Junaluska and in several mountain churches before arriving in Charlotte in 2007, where he pastored at Cole, Memorial, and St. Andrews United Methodist Churches. He came to Aldersgate in July with all the right credentials. He is a fourth-generation Methodist.

He played soccer in his youth — a sport deeply rooted in Latino culture — and still loves it. He speaks five languages. From the number of fist bumps he shares with both children and adults, it is clear that he has the gift of radical hospitality.

His impact is already being felt.

About 100 children have signed up to play soccer. Every practice and game begins with prayer. On a recent afternoon, moms, dads, and caregivers gathered in lawn chairs to watch their children master headers and corner kicks.

A core group of 40 adults is helping grow the center and the church.

A dozen people have been trained as lay chaplains.

This is all part of the Great Commission.

“We follow Jesus, who said: ‘Love God first, then love your neighbor,’” says Ortigoza.
“This can be a multiethnic, multicultural, and multigenerational place.”
